The Boar Head
The mighty Boar is more rare in
Heraldry but dates back to early times in both Celtic and Viking mythology.
The imagery of the full Boar can be found in early Pictish stonework in Scotland,
the most famous being the The Knocknagael Boar Stone (dated early 7th century)
in Inverness. It was also depicted at least three Roman legions and the White
Boar was the personal charge of Richard the III of England in the 15th century.
This particular Boar’s Head is based on the personal emblem of Clan Campbell, one of the most powerful clans of Scotland between the 13th and 17th century. An early Campbell married the heiress of the O'Duines and through this marriage he gained the lordship of Loch Awe. The O’Duines became Clan Diarmid, which was believed to be a fancied connection to Diarmid the Boar, a great hero from early Celtic legends. It was from Loch Awe and the surrounding area that Clan Campbell established itself as a powerful family, defeating many in battle with the Boar’s Head as their family charge.
