These Replica Medieval Shields . . .
are constructed of 16 ga. steel. The shield size is 18" x 24" and it has a curved shape. It is the classic "Heater" style battle shield. They are reproduced digitally with stunning detail from an original hand-painted piece. They are then sprayed with a protective layer of polyurethane to preserve the artwork. The shields are available in either a wall display version with a chain to hang from or a hand-held battle ready version with heavy duty 1 1/2" leather straps on the back. The Gryphon

In Heraldry, the Gryphon is the most widely used symbol of legendary creatures. Its mythical qualities date back to the early Grecian culture who believed that once a fierce monster flew the skies with the wings and head of an eagle but the body of a lion with eagle talons instead of claws. It can be found as early as 3000 BC in Egyptian artifacts and on Persian seals. As the eagle is considered the King of its class and the lion of his own, it is considered the King of all creatures as it combines the kingly qualities of both beasts and birds. It was considered to be the guardian of much treasure and became a natural symbol to be added to early Heraldry.

In heraldry, it is considered a symbol of Boldness and Courage and of a warrior willing to face the very worst of enemies. It is found on the military shields of leaders as a symbol of strength with intelligence, military courage and leadership. It is found in Houses throughout Europe, from Britain to Poland, Germany and the Netherlands.

The Gryphon or Griffin is even found today in modern usage with sports teams and as one of the most formidable opponents in video games. Sometimes confused with dragons, the Gryphon is singular in its appearance with the sharp massive talons and its bushy lion’s tail on its muscular body. It is a noble emblem and is to be worn with great pride.
